According to me , the strongest arguments in his favour are :
-first is the statistic: more than 1 billon people speak English but only 330 millions of them have English as the first language .So that the percentage 33% is not high.
-Second, the author focus on the fact that two new factors: nationalism and technology will check the spread of English. Britain ’s ex colonies used English because it was a neutral language among competing native tongues and it was rejected in other ex colonies such as
Siri lanka and Tanzania . .
I don’t agree with the writers’ point of view .I thing that English is the language a vehicle of different sciences .We are in the age of sciences and technologies and they all develop in English .The first universities in the world according to Shangai order are the American and the English universities
and the all use English . All busines are using documents written in English.
May be it will be other languages in the future but I think that English preserve it important place in the world of Languages.
I do agree with you to a certain extent, but how about the arguments he makes about ex-lingua-francas dying out... ?? That is a string argument, don't you think?
